Iowa Secretary of State Paul Pate said Monday his office is unlikely to issue guidance in the upcoming election for county auditors to challenge the ballots of people identified as as potential noncitizens, a situation that happened in 2024.

Two weeks before the Nov. 5, 2024 election, Pate issued guidance to county auditors to challenge ballots of 2,176 registered voters identified as potential noncitizens, because they had reported to the Iowa Department of Transportation or another government entity they were not U.S. citizens in the past 12 years and went on to register to vote. Pate said at the time the action was necessary because his office was denied access to the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services’ Systematic Alien Verification for Entitlements (SAVE) database to confirm the current voting eligibility of these individuals.
