AUSTIN - Texas voters will choose a new attorney general to represent the state in November because Ken Paxton is running for the Senate.
State Senator Mayes Middleton will represent the Republican Party after defeating Chip Roy with 55 percent of the vote. Both candidates spent the campaign debating who is more conservative. Roy won the endorsement of Donald Trump, but voters chose Middleton.
In the Democratic attorney general primary, State Senator Nathan Johnson won with 60 percent of the vote over former Galveston Mayor Joe Jaworski. Johnson highlighted his legislative experience during the campaign. Jaworski focused his campaign on expanding the reach of the Democratic Party to progressive voters.
On the Democratic side for the Texas Congressional District 1 runoff, Yolanda Prince won the nomination. Prince received nearly 72 percent of the vote against Dax Alexander. The Texas Legislature redrew this district last year. The district includes most of East Texas and now covers Nacogdoches and Lufkin. Prince will face Republican incumbent Nathaniel Moran in the November general election.
Texas voters also cast ballots in the Democratic race for lieutenant governor. State Representative Vikki Goodwin will face incumbent Lieutenant Governor Dan Patrick in November. Goodwin defeated Marcos Velez with nearly 70 percent of the vote. Patrick won 80 percent of the Republican vote in the March primary.
Texas election officials have established the key deadlines for voters as the state prepares for the upcoming general election. The final day to register to vote in the election is Oct. 5. Voters who choose to cast their ballots ahead of time can take advantage of the early voting period from Oct. 19 through Oct. 30.
