(The Center Square) – From coast to coast, the Trump administration is prosecuting Islamic terrorism cases as the U.S. approaches the 25-year anniversary of 9/11, the largest terrorist attack on U.S. soil.
In new cases, three men being prosecuted weren’t yet born on 9/11. They were born in the U.S. and grew up to want to commit terrorism, pledging support to the Islamic State of Iraq and al Sham (ISIS), authorities alleged. The U.S. designated ISIS as a foreign terrorist organization in 2004.
Tomas-Kaan Jimenez-Guzel, 19, and Milo Sedarat, 21, from the affluent northern New Jersey suburb of Montclair, and Saed Ali Mirreh, 20, from the Seattle metropolitan suburb of Kent, Washington, pleaded guilty to terrorism charges and supporting ISIS.
In federal court in New Jersey, Jimenez-Guzel pleaded guilty to conspiracy to provide material support to an FTO and Sedarat pleaded guilty to concealing material support to an FTO. Mirreh was initially charged in New Jersey but agreed to have his case transferred to the Western District of Washington. He also pleaded guilty to provide material support to an FTO.
“Any individual supporting ISIS or other terrorist organizations, regardless of whether it involves organizing an attack, planning to travel overseas, or funding others to join ISIS will be investigated swiftly and prosecuted. Jimenez-Guzel and Mirreh planned to travel abroad to actively fight with ISIS, and Sedarat surreptitiously provided funding for those plans,” U.S. Attorney Robert Frazer for the District of New Jersey said in a statement. He added that his office was “committed to disrupting foreign terrorist organizations, preventing ISIS-inspired terrorism, and holding accountable those individuals who support terrorist organizations.”
According to court documents, Jimenez-Guzel, Mirreh and other co-conspirators planned to travel to Turkey in November 2025 and then to join ISIS as fighters. Last October, Sedarat met with Jimenez-Guzel and gave him $500 in cash to help buy a plane ticket for Mirreh to travel to join ISIS, according to the charges. Investigators learned of the plan through encrypted phone app messages.
Last October, Jimenez-Guzel purchased a plane ticket to Istanbul, Turkey, departing from Newark Liberty International Airport in New Jersey, authorities alleged. Mirreh also purchased a ticket to Istanbul departing from Seattle-Tacoma International Airport. Prior to their planned departure, individuals they’d been communicating with in Dearborn, Michigan, were arrested and charged with conspiracy to commit terrorism and a terrorist act with ISIS. These arrests accelerated Jimenez-Guzel’s and Mirreh’s travel plans, authorities alleged.
After the Michigan arrests, Jimenez-Guzel re-booked his flight to Turkey to leave earlier. Mirreh booked an additional flight to Turkey to also leave earlier than planned, authorities found. Their plans were thwarted. Jimenez-Guzel was arrested at the airport in Newark; Mirreh was arrested at his home in Washington.
The charge of conspiracy to provide material support to an FTO, to which Jimenez-Guzel and Mirreh pleaded guilty, carries a potential sentence of up to 20 years in prison, a $250,000 fine and a term of life of supervised release. The charge of concealing material support, to which Sedarat pleaded guilty, carries a potential sentence of up to 10 years in prison, up to a $250,000 fine and a term of life of supervised release. Mirreh’s sentencing is scheduled for October. Sedarat’s and Jimenez-Guzel’s sentencings are scheduled for December.
FBI Special Agents and Joint Terrorism Task Force Officers in Newark, New Jersey, and Seattle, Washington, investigated the case with the assistance of the New York Police Department, Montclair Police Department and Rowan University Police Department.
These cases are the latest of young men pledging support to ISIS who weren’t alive on 9/11 but were born in the U.S. and as young adults vowed to commit terrorism.
Last month, a 22-year-ol Muslim man, Mohamed Sagha, living in Wayne, New Jersey, was charged with attempting to provide support to ISIS, as were men between the ages of 21 and 25 in Kansas City, Kansas, and San Diego, California, The Center Square reported. One in Kansas City said he wished he could kill 300,000,000 Americans, according to court documents.
A Texas man was also charged with providing material support to ISIS in New York who was building and instructing others how to build bombs, The Center Square reported.
This month, a Muslim born in the U.S. living in New Jersey who would have been 3 years-old on 9/11 was convicted of providing material support to terrorism after attempting to carry out an Iranian fatwa, The Center Square reported.
Federal law enforcement thwarted their plans.
As prosecutions are ongoing, U.S. troops continue to fight ISIS.
Last December, the U.S. and Jordan launched attacks against 70 ISIS targets in Syria after ISIS fighters killed two U.S. troops and a U.S. civilian interpreter. In May, U.S. and Nigerian forces killed an ISIS leader after the Trump administration deployed troops to Nigeria in response to Christian genocide occurring there, The Center Square reported.
According to a U.S. House Committee on Homeland Security terror threat assessment report, federal prosecutions in 30 U.S. states involve individuals attempting to provide material support to ISIS, Hezbollah and al Queda. According to Georgetown University's Project on Extremism, nearly 200 people were charged from 2014 to 2025 for offenses related to ISIS, The Center Square reported.
Over a 45-year period analyzed since 1979, there have been nearly 70,000 Islamic terrorist attacks that have been committed worldwide, The Center Square reported.
