General Motors Company GM is exiting its joint venture with Samsung SDI by selling its 49.99% stake in the $3.5 billion Indiana battery plant to its South Korean partner. The transaction will make Samsung SDI the sole owner of SDI-GM Synergy Cells Holdings, although the purchase price was not disclosed.

General Motors and Samsung SDI initially announced the partnership in April 2023 and finalized the joint venture in 2024. The planned 680-acre facility in New Carlisle, IN, was designed to produce nickel-rich, NCA-based prismatic battery cells under Samsung SDI’s PRiMX brand. The plant was expected to begin with an annual production capacity of 27 GWh, with the potential to expand to 36 GWh, and mass production was targeted for 2027.
